The First Kiss was born out of a communication gap. My curator asked me to participate in a collage exhibition, for which I decided to use artisanal fabrics that I had been hoarding over time. Eventually I realized that the said exhibition was for digital works. Sometimes things go wrong for a reason!
The First Kiss incorporates heirloom fabrics from me and my friends’ families, and outlived garments cutting across 3 generations!
This work is a recreation of Austrian Artist Gustav Klimt’s work - as an ode to him and his works. He has been the key inspiration behind me turning to a self taught artist, and his works have taught me how to paint
Each of these pieces have around 6,000-7,000 fragments of fabric.
The Orange sky itself has 172 different variety of fabrics, and around 2,500+ pieces.
‘The Seeker’ was inspired by a lone fish swimming against the rest of the population at Monterey Bay Aquarium, California.
The styles of patterns and drawings in The Dreamweaver are inspired from folk traditions, especially from Madhubani art - a folk art from that originates from my home state of Bihar in India.
In a world that is increasing bending towards neutrals and pastels, my art palette is a mark of resistance.
A 2020 study of 7,000 photographs of everyday objects in the Science Museum UK found that 40% of the objects were in shades of blacks and greys.
The same study had a graph showing 70% of the cars today are Gray, black or white.
One look around the streets, interiors and exteriors of buildings and retail store windows validates the story.
While fashion seems to be claiming bits of color back in bits of season here and there but major global trends still tend to be grayscale.
I protest against this neutrality and its implications too. Embracing color is embracing diversity, embracing color is embracing life.
